Day 34: Read Psalm 64-65
Like many other families, we have visited the Niagara Falls on a few occasions. The three Falls are amazing sights to see. The vertical height is over 176 feet in some sections. During periods of peak flow in the summer and fall, more than 700,000 gallons of water per second pour over Niagara Falls! The water falls at 32 feet per second over the Falls; hitting the base of the American and Bridal Veil Falls with 280 tons of force and 2,509 tons of force at the Horseshoe Falls.
Now, believe or not, there have been many people foolish enough to try and go over the Falls. As you can imagine, it didn't fare well for most of them. You can't tame the Falls! Now, I want you to think about the Falls as you read Psalm 65:7. God "stills the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves, the tumult of the peoples".
Tumult means to "make a loud, confused noise". Ever since sin entered into the world it's caused chaos in our world. Cain killed Abel. The nations scattered in confusion at the Tower of Babel. Wars and rumors of war for thousands of years. As I write this, Russia has invaded Ukraine and many lives have been ruined. David was involved in so many battles that God wouldn't let him build the Temple because he had "shed much blood and have fought many wars" (1 Chronicles 22:8).
What does all of this have to do with Psalm 65:7? God is not unaware of what's happening in the world. And He is sovereign and will ultimately accomplish His will even when it doesn't always seem like it. Why? Because He is all-powerful. Only He can tame the waters. He can "still the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves" and so He can tame the "tumult of the peoples". Stay calm, like still waters. God will bring perfect peace in His time.
How often do you take time to just think about what heaven will be like? Take some time now to do so.
God can "still the roaring of the waves"? What "waves" do you need to ask God to "still" in your life?
Prayer for the day: "God, thank you for your power. Thank you for having all things under your control. Please still the waves in my life right now. Thank you for raising Jesus from the dead. Help remind me that I have resurrection power available to me. Amen."
